Britbox UK - UK SVoD Platform.

I managed to get Britbox working on the Shield (Android TV based) by sideloading Firefox for TV using Aptoide. It's not perfect, but at least I can watch on a tv, but I'd use the Chromecast feature if they ever get round to it or an Android TV app.

I'm just making an observation. I'm not signing up neither am I picking holes.

See they've nabbed all the Downton Abbey series too today, which will be a significant driver to the platform. It's still lacking a load of documentaries at present, I'd really like to see all the BBC OU science BBC FOUR programming appear fairly soon.

I wonder if future Channel 5 programme will go to Britbox once it's done the 30 day period on My5 or will it depend on each programme and what deal they made for streaming.

Still no Fire Stick support.

First Comedy Central title on Britbox (Comedy Central at the Comedy Store)

The Drama and Comedy sections really are impressive now on the service, Documentaries still regrettably weak and relying on celebs travelogues to form the bulk of the content in that Genre.

A strange one, A BAFTA production has appeared now, a talking heads film discussion interview series.

So we have

ITV,
BBC,
Channel 5,
Comedy Central,
A collection of films whose communality I have yet to work out
and BAFTA

as active participants

with
Channel Four

Pending.

I've been trialling this and there's aspects about it in these early days that annoy me. The Royle Family is using those horrible fake episode titles that make it sound like some bad American sitcom ('Bills, Bills, Bills', 'Making Ends Meet', 'Another Woman?' etc). Also there are a few shows that I know should be in widescreen but are using 4:3 copies (e.g. later series of Vicar of Dibley).

And of course the big one… it doesn't support 50p so everything gets a film look. But at least it uses the phrase 'series' and not 'season'!

I'm not really a user of streaming services, their content just doesn't interest me (I have enough on live & recorded TV and YouTube to watch anyway) and I tend to prefer getting DVD/BD versions of stuff I have more than a passing interest in, but I'd be willing to take another look at Britbox in the future when the selection gets wider and hopefully they might get some rarer stuff in.

That annoys me on Keeping Up Appearances with the generic "SERIES 1 EPISODE 1" name. However I think they're the same as the BBC DVD version?

That's one of the really big annoyances about most streaming services, and one of the reasons why they're not yet a suitable replacement for DVD/Blu-Ray or broadcast TV.

Hmm, well that’s different - it appears that Keeping Up Appearances did have episode titles originally, but Britbox doesn’t use them. Whereas The Royle Family’s first three series never had episode titles originally, they seem to have been made up years later by someone else (hence why they seem really out of place). How weird!


As long as there’s a description underneath the episode number I don’t see the problem with a show not using episode titles.
