The BBC and ITV don't run a local broadcast operation. They run a regional one. The BBC - after a trial of local broadcasting - decided not to pursue it, and has left it to local papers and local TV operations.

Wasn't it more a case of it being decided for the BBC their local service wouldn't be rolled out due to local papers and radio moaning.

That's right, both commercial radio and the local press were concerned that it make their businesses unviable. Ironically, if you listen to an average local radio station operated by Global, the token local story is a national one starting with "People in 'x' etc"

You could debate the data which I've given which shows the clear differences between US and London consumption of news media.

I know morning radio shows are popular in the US, yet the US/CA model of providing long early morning local newscasts don't happen here as there isn't a market for it. Just like rolling local news channels in the UK.

Well you said that North Americans dont listen to news in the morning. Ok, I just wanted to be sure I understood your statement. Its just a bit confusing. Just to clarify most large cities in North America offer 24hr all news radio stations, not a "long early morning local newscast". That are typically at the top or in the top 5 rated station in a given market. Only clarifying for future reference. I know ITN operated NewsDirect a few years back. Now the current station is operated by LBC News1152. Its a good effort. Needs a few more resources. But its been on air for quite a while now in its current incarnation for a the daytime hours. Too bad the format was messed about and was bounced around bit by different owners and such. Who know what strength the station could have now. Simulcasts with LBC evenings and overnight. I think the LBCNews 1152 and the regular LBC Radio branding might be a bit confusing. As they are essentially 2 different stations. oh well.

NewsDirect back in the day was brilliant. Love the audio imaging. Felt fast and immediate.

Current LBC1152 audio imaging of course quite similar to LBC news branding.

All news radio is based on the format created at NYC's 1010 WINS
Here is the brand new updated audio imaging.

Of course I'm aware of the rolling news radio stations, yet again these largely don't work in the UK thanks to the BBC providing Radio 4, 5 Live and local radio stations across the country. So you'd never get two variations of the rolling news format as you do in New York with WCBS and WINS.

News Direct is now LBC London News, a part-time rolling news radio station which is on-air from 7am-7pm weekdays, 7am-6pm Saturday and 7am-5pm Sunday. At other times, it simulcasts LBC, which is similar to WABC in New York.

Presumably the weekend bulletins are crewed by the same team so they do both, where as weekdays have one per bulletin, alas one has been chopped.

Why they didn't keep lunchtime instead of evening which goes up against the BBC and ITV news hours?

Total guesswork here but presumably they've done this so that the people who staff the programme are working relatively normal hours rather than having to come in earlier in the morning for a lunchtime programme which (presumably) adds a premium to their wages.

There is absolutely no premium on their wages for working earlier in the mornings from what I have heard.

Thanks for the listening times for LBC1152. Not sure why you assumed anyone was saying all news stations would work across the UK. But thats par for the course on here. Jumping to conclusions, that is. Obviously rolling all news radio works partially in London as there has been an all news station in existence for a number of years to some degree even if its just part-time since the 90s. Too bad they messed around with the format and frequency a bit too much.

The rolling news station in London is a legacy of when Reuters as London News Radio were awarded the LBC licences in 1994. The rolling news station format never really worked and is propped up by Global who use existing facilities provided by the company to provide news for all of their music stations, plus LBC. It does have a credible audience, but not the same numbers that the BBC speech stations and LBC's FM service enjoy.

Incidentally, the rolling news service was switched from FM to AM in 2003 when the owner of the time decided the general talk format of LBC was more viable.

LBC London News actually beats BBC Radio London for audience (474k v 329k in the last Rajars), although it's nowhere near the numbers Radios 4 and 5 Live get in the capital.

It does the job of boosting the overall share for LBC. I should have made it clear that I meant R4 and 5 Live with regards to BBC radio.

BBC Radio London as a full service local radio station for the capital continues to show that it doesn't work by continually going for the 'local' card, even though when I've listened to it, I've found it too niche and a bit of a closed community. This is what happens when you have successful national speech stations.

Radio London in it's numerous guises has never worked. GLR of course led to the introduction of 6 Music.

As a stat thats pretty mad. And I think it contridicts London Lites argument the city doesn't warrant rollling news services when it's beating the general output BBC station despite not even being on FM.

Yet both stations aren't in the millions. Radio London in-particular is a waste of licence payers money thanks to R4 and 5 Live in effect doing a better job with speech content and commercial radio serving their older audience better musically.

LBC London News does a decent job when it's actually on-air, but I wonder how many of those listeners are actually listening to the LBC simulcast instead?

Might be the thin end of the wedge for BBC LR, but a better use for 94.9 FM in London would be 5 Live, with London news and info opt-outs ?

They should try local breakfast (despite the fact nobody listens to it) and drive, so that local politicians can still be held to account, along with sport and the ability to opt out of national programming for local emergencies, such as the Grenfell Fire and severe weather.

LBC London News 1152 is barely live during the day - it's full of 'packages' that are on computer and tend to end when another package clunks into play, well before the original one has finished, then you hear a 'live' voice which sounds generally confused as to what the hell is going on. Glenn Thompsett is sometimes one of these live voices.
