London Live may as well be a text service with weather, news, travel, tubes etc. Maybe linked up with radio station audio, and some local static ads.

At least that way it would provide some form of public service, and offices / public places etc. might have it on in the background.

Or maybe NextRadioTV could move in and attempt a London version of their BFM Paris news channel. One can certainly dream...

I am to be convinced that anyone would watch that service. The BBC and Sky struggle to keep national news services going as it is, with the BBC networking a lot with World and Sky losing hand over fist.

I don't know what the cultural difference is between the UK and France, whether it's just simply that these channels have a heritage now and people are in the habit of watching them, or indeed whether they make any money at all anyway, but I can't see any demand for them here. If people want to know if the Tube is down they seem quite happy with the radio, TV in the morning or social media. And if something big enough happens in London then it tends to appear in the national news.

We'll probably never know, but here's a livestream of BFM Paris so everyone can judge for themselves:

It also helps that BFM Paris has the support of BFMTV and RMC Radio in the same building. BFM would have minimal support in London, requiring a whole new British team to support the channel and would be on their own with no support bar what Paris can provide.

I like the format, but it won't be BFMTV providing the service. London Live will be sold either to one of the two British local tv groups or an American group who can plough money into the channel.

CBS is an interesting one, but I'm more interested in Discovery sniffing around. Could they feasibly do something with their Channel 5 brand, creating network shows and including short localised updates through the day?

do you mean their Scandinavian one? I think it would be a bit confusing given the pre-existing Channel 5 in the UK.

No, I was referencing C5 UK. Possibly some kind of brand extension like 5 Star - but with local opts for news.

I do find watching these local American channels amusing but the coverage of their area is quite detailed, watched a house fire burning the other day live coverage started at 4am

In New York and many other areas the Local News on NBC, CBS, ABC etc usually begin at 4:30am, to lead up to the network breakfast shows that start at 7:00am.

The morning commute for many (as I understand it) in large US cities starts that early too, it really is a completely different world there, hence their model for local telly has no commonality with ours.

No, I was referencing C5 UK.

Um, unless I've missed something, there's no link between C5 (owned by Viacom International) and Discovery Networks.
