London Live

Would a major story in London get wall to wall coverage like this within 10-15 minutes of happening? (Choppers, ground crews, multiple cameras?)
This doesnt include WPIX-11 or local 24hr News Channels NEWS 12 or NY1

At some point a local London story is still big news for London but ceases to be a big national story, so should SkyNews or BBC NEWS continue rolling coverage? Would that story be given a cursory mention. Does that story continue to warrant rolling coverage. Thats a good question I think.

I think it helps that some stations do pool footage from each other (as you can see WNYW and WCBS pool footage, which Fox News took, while CNN took WABC's footage).

Across the country during the recession several stations did a chopper share. Kinda surprised that WCBS and WNYW still do this. Its been in place for a couple of years now.

6-9am - Wake Up London with Marc Edwards.
12.30 - Headline London with Claudia-Liza Armah (Thursday: Power London with Amol Rajan.
6.30pm - London Go (Entertainment News)
7pm - Not the One Show with Louise Scodie.

While the 7pm is the peak news programme, the newsy shows at Breakfast and the lunchtime show look the most promising.

Not the One Show sounds like a hybrid of The One Show and London Tonight under the editorship of Stuart Thomas, although the Standard claims they'll have a weekly investigative slot.

WNYW and WNBC used to pool their videos as part of a collective "Local News Services" until Comcast bought NBC. WNYW also shares WCBS's helicopter.

When the stage collapsed at the theatre in London (not a major national story), Sky and BBC went to rolling coverage of the events for some hours, so I would presume so.

London Live's owner Evgeny Lebedev plans to be a presenter on the channel in an interview with The Guardian.

If it's anything like his odd pieces for the Standard, it'll be more cannon fodder for Private Eye.

That's true, I watched coverage on both Sky and BBC and frankly was shocked how long it took for live pics and a reporter to get on the scene. So hopefully this new endeavour will increase the speed and indepth coverage a metro area can expect. This can also be applied to the coverage of the helicopter crash in Glasgow. Literally too forever to get any pics outta Central Glasgow. Shocking.

I think you're expecting too much from this outfit. London Live's overall budget while large in comparison to other Local TV licencee's is still a minnow in comparison to the BBC, ITV and Sky who have large resources. That includes the ITV London outfit who share all resources with the national ITV News team.,

While London Live won't be the first to break news, I think it'll find it's niche between BBC London and ITV News London.

Does anyone know if LondonLive have a truck deal with anyone - or are they planning on using 4G/3G videophone-type stuff for live video hits?

Given that they are using Nikon DSLRs on Robot Arms as their studio cameras (let's hope they run them 50Hz not 25Hz - News shot film-look always looks a bit 'wrong') I expect they will be using low-cost solutions.

FaceTime or Skype anyone?

If they can get CAA clearance I'd expect Quadcopters to be used rather than a "Newschopper 8" type approach...

And if anyone thinks London Live is going to be like US local networks - I think they are in for a bit of a surprise. Think the budget has the wrong number of zeroes on it for that...

RT is a heavy user of Skype/Facetime for their two way interviews.

What I imagine will happen is and I'm mainly thinking of the lunchtime show which is the most newsy, will be pre-prepared packages with an emphasis on interviews, with journalists who work for LL or the Standard/Independent, alongside pre-booked outside guests who'll promote their gig/event. The lead story will probably be the same as the splash in the Standard, setting the agenda for the paper. The 7pm entertainment/news programme again will probably blend the two in a One Show style format of pre-recorded packages.

If they do lives, I won't be surprised if they use 4G rather than a sat truck. Sky News have also used it.

For breaking news, I'd still expect Sky and the News Channel to lead first, with a deeper emphasis on the main London BBC/ITV bulletins.
