Hornby is face of Meridian Tonight

Phil Hornby, ITV Meridian’s political editor, is to become a main presenter of Meridian Tonight for the south-east.

Hornby, 42, replaces Geoff Clark alongside Charlotte Hawkins to present the 6pm weekday programme.

He joined Meridian’s predecessor, TVS, 20 years ago as a trainee journalist in the south-east newsroom, and worked there as a sub-editor, reporter, presenter and producer. In 1993 he became Meridian’s political editor.

After a spell with BBC Midlands Today , in 1997 he returned to ITV in Westminster to provide political coverage for both Meridian and Anglia Television.

He recently produced a documentary for Meridian on the 20th anniversary of the Brighton bomb.

Ah, so it's Geoff who's "defected" to the BBC because he doesn't like the de-regionalisation of ITV. South-East isn't my patch, mind; I'm a South viewer, with fab Fred and dynamic Debbie. I'm currently making the most of Meridian's excellent (and highly-rated) news service while I can, before the consolidation of the 3 studios and axing of over half of the Meridian workforce next year. I'll probably switch to the BBC's South Today after that.

Fred Dineage must be nearing retirement! He has practically presented everything in the southern region over the years.

Which is part of the reason why he's become so popular. He's a really nice guy according to those who've met him, and he certainly makes the news more enjoyable. It'll be sad to see him replaced when he retires, though I don't know when that will be.

Phil did use to be one of the stand in presenters on Coast to Coast South East in the late 80s/early 90s I seem to remember.

Seemed like it was going to be a straight contest between David Glencorse and Glen Thomsett as they have both been presenting since Geoff's defection.

According to a story from Kent Online posted in another thread, the South East edition of Meridian Tonight will be presented from Whiteley, Hampshire for the first time on 6 December.

Just a thought - it has been suggested several times that Meridian will be the first region to regain the ITV News Channel on DTT - could this coincide with the move to Whiteley (and thus the commissioning of new equipment)?

Have to say, I am a little confused. So Meridian South is moving to Whiteley? Meridian South-East moving back to Vinters Park?

All three sub-regional news services will be presented from the same building in Whiteley, Hants.

The south-east service will have its newsroom at Vintners Park.

The south-east programme will be presented from Whiteley in Hampshire but the reporting team is back at Vinters Park in Maidstone. It's a £2million facility at the Maidstone Studios, which is located exactly where the Coast to Coast newsroom was until December '92.
