I've just seen the BBC World breakfiller for April, but it's still in the same crappy style they've been using since January.

Is BBC World not changing the breakfiller then?

Confused

Yeah, they quit running the news and sport bulletins at the breaks round the new year for some reason, and put in these stupid month-long 'coming up' things instead.

I'll be glad when they ditch those.

The reason why they did this is because the old Breakfiller computer system was useless. It used a bizzare mixture of laser discs and teletext transmation systems to they chucked the thing out at the start of this year before it went kaboom.

As mentioned keep and eye out, it might be getting back to normal soon.

OT - Is the breakfiller graphic sequence in 16:9 or just 4:3? BBC World idents and stuff are in 16:9 but i dunno about the breakfiller.

Are they ever gonna make the cahnnel widescreen, and for that matter, stereo?

It would be nice to see BBC World in widescreen, and even more so in stereo! However, they reckon that the majority of viewers around the world have 4:3 mono sets - therefore there's not much point really in broadcasting it in w/s. After September 11th, when they were running the World News on News 24 at 9.30am on BBC World as well (and therefore using the titles and vamp), it looked fabulous in w/s!

Why don't they use a proper ident and headlines et al when they go to BBC World News. I don't think they should do the N24 roundup, just go straight to the BBC World studio after a N24 ministingythingy.

Re the computer system: I'd heard that they'd upgraded to a newer computer system when News24 went live some years back, but I guess it wasn't as new as I thought. It seems pretty silly ... they could have built a Flash programme that did the same thing for a fraction of the cost. But that makes too much sense now doesn't it?

Re the widescreen: they could broadcast it widescreen on Windows Media Player, but choose not to. I wonder why?

I think the retirement of the old breakfiller at the end of last year had more to do with the changes to the BBC World Teletext service, which meant most of the data used (business / sport) etc was no longer available.  This ABF ended on the same day as the teletext ended.

The ABF wasn't really any less reliable than it had ever been and has given years of trouble-free break-filling.  Problems with the supply of data was the cause of most problems.  And as for the description of a 'bizzarre mixture' of laser disk and teletext info... isn't unique a nicer word?   Smile

AFAIK the BBC World pres items (most of which are based on the dark red theme) including the ABF background are all 4:3  because the TX suite is 4:3 only.  Anything played from the news studio is 16:9 so news titles and stings (mostly the cream background) are widescreen.

The idents / backgrounds could possibly be a centre-cut-out but I've never seen a true widescreen version of any pres items.

Widescreen or stereo?    I think that's fairly unlikely even in the distant future.  Having distribution across so many countries where widescreen is unheard would make it practically impossible. Presumably a decision was made long ago that it shouldn't be stereo and to suddenly start distribution in stereo sounds expensive to me.

The main BBC World top-o-the-hour ident and the other one is in Widescreen, visit Nabie-Lairn to see it. I love the music on that main ident, ba-bam, dadaladalada babam dubadabuh babam, dadbladalada duh dum, badabum.

The issue of stereo has always been brought up again and again. I believe the decision was taken to distribute in mono as it would cause less problems when piping it out to all the different areas of the world.

Having stereo would just be nice, but would mean more chances of problems occuring.

Output from the news studios is in 16:9 but it output in 14:9 which NOW is actually within a 4:3 frame rather than using a switching system previously. Which is why the DOG always remains in the 14:9 area even when 4:3 returns...the channel doesn't switch to widescreen anymore...just output is in 14:9 but broadcast in 4:3.

Confused? Wink

I really wish BBC World wasb Widescreen and Stereo, because it's this channel was has the fantastic idents and the vamps, which is why it's so frustrating to see BBC News 24 have both widescreen and stereo, but has a poor vamp and the idents are not as good as World's are!

Can you imagine what Sport Today in widescreen and surround sound would sound like? better then the whole of News 24's output!
