Exodus of Abingdon news staff

By Walé Azeez

The news editor and all the senior reporters at ITV Central South’s Abingdon newsroom are leaving the broadcaster after taking voluntary redundancy, in an exodus of almost one-third of editorial staff.

Eight out of 11 full-time reporters, including a sports journalist, plus a sub-editor and the news editor, have decided that, with the changes that have taken place at ITV since the Carlton-Granada merger, working for the broadcaster is no longer for them.

Seven of the redundancies are at senior level.

At least six journalists from Central Nottingham and four from Birmingham have also applied for redundancy.

Many are understood to be wary of further changes to the newsroom that will make it increasingly pressurised.

One journalist familiar with the situation told Press Gazette: “In Birmingham, some of the reporters have become video journalists using PD150 video cameras. I think there is a general feeling that people don’t want to work in the new way that ITV wants to work.”

The source added that it was not just a question of leaving because they were intimidated by technological changes, such as the introduction of desktop video editing.

“There have already been a number of technological changes over the years, so obviously no one’s a Luddite.

But it’s a general feeling that people can’t do their job and serve the public as efficiently as they would like to be able to do. It’s not just a load of grumpy Victor Meldrews leaving,” said the journalist.

ITV’s redundancy terms are a month’s pay for each year of service, capped at £50,000.

ITV Central controller of news Laurie Upshon said: “We aren’t losing everyone with experience and it’s given us an opportunity to promote the people who have been showing promise and talent.”

He said posts from Nottingham and Birmingham “in other positions” will move to Abingdon.

I really believe that the Granada-Carlton merger has made things worse - any opinions?

A real shame to see this happening at Central South, as it's always been a fantastic service - but the newly merged ITV doesn't seem too bothered about decent regional news nowadays.

I don't blame them for quitting, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them head to South Today, as the BBC are really beefing up the Oxford region and regional news in general - the complete opposite of the current trend at ITV. I know where I'd rather be.

Does anyone know if the long term plan for South Today Oxford is to have the programme anchored from Oxford and be a programme in its own right - much like the Hull split?

Yes to the first part - they may already be there for all I know. As for the second, I'm not sure. It would certainly make a lot of sense, and I expect it'll happen at some point down the line.

I think it'd make a lot of sense for the BBC to make South Today Oxford into a full programme, and extend it to cover the area served by Ridge Hill, so in effect covering the same area as Central News South.

When I used to live in Gloucestershire, Central News South always seemed much more locally relevant than Midlands Today.

Back on topic, and it's definitely a shame if Central News South is going to suffer from these changes. Considering it doesn't really cover a particularly news-rich patch I always found it an extremely professional news programme putting a lot of larger regional offerings to shame.

It is just totally stupid and awful these days the ITV Regional News. I couldn't understand why they didn't just leave them as they were.

This news about Central News South is upsetting aswell as the move of the Nottingham studios and the Meridian Studios in Maidstone.

Madness!

I'd have thought that it'd make more sense to merge the Oxford and Hannington TX areas into one news region......

Yes, I absolutely agree with you TELEVISION. When it first happened I thought, great! More new programmes, a better news service, and hopefully they will but out Grampian and Scottish, and create great programmew, what with all this new money. ITV News has improved, but compared to BBC News and Sky News, ITVN is on a tiny budget. More money is needed to be pumped in. They seem, however to be cost-cutting at every opportunity. If they don't do something about it soon, they will be in a very sorry state. Lets, just hope, that ITV News isn't affected too greatly - only if it's for the better!

......and now Central News East will be employing local students in the newsroom at weekends. £6 per hour, great.

Yep - and if Carlton/Granada had merged earlier there was a plan to move the Meridian Newbury operation to Central South Abingdon rather than co-siting at Northam (as is the case now)...

There is quite a strong argument for a BBC Thames Valley opt combining Hannington and Oxford transmitters - though Hannington (analogue at least) is a popular transmitter - it even covers pockets just to the north of Southampton I believe.

The border between Hannington and Rowridge is located two miles north of Winchester city centre......
