Well probably more real than it was.

They don't watch soaps in soaps do they. How unreal is that!

Actually, they are being realistic. The vast majority of the population don't watch soaps any more.
Brekkie, ToasterMan and Jon gave kudos

Quite correct of course. But even in the days of 20 million that was still the minority.

It would be interesting to know whether there were any more detailed statistics on the subject, but I doubt it.

Back in the day of 15-20m audience figures, they would probably be loyal to only one, so it would be a different 15-20m watching the rival soaps.

It could well be that the majority of the population were engaged in one way or another with a 'continuing drama' as they are described these days.

I'd love someone on CS to be seen watching Eastenders.

Dot Cotton watches Coronation Street.

On Brookside the residents used to watch ‘Meadowcroft Park’.

I also remember the brilliant Julia Brogan in Brookside mentioning that she was ‘off to watch Corrie’.

In Emmerdale they have "Castle Bridge" on ITV at 7PM, as we saw in a TV guide once.

I think in an early episode the Coronation Street theme was audible too. Anyone remember the Magic Rabbits?

I’m sure Brookside was originally titled as Meadowcroft. And those damn rabbits, with the annoying music, that was always on whenever Kylie Corkhill was watching TV.

It seemed to be on no matter who was watching TV, even the adults!
