Is that not when Anne Kirkbride took 6 months of for cancer treatment. Perhaps that was why it reappeared if ITV3 is repeating those episodes this week and somehow it appeared.
Anne Kirkbride does have a fairly significant absense coming up due to her Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treatment - she's away from December 1993 to May 1994 (when the Samir storyline begins) and again from December 1994 to March 1995 when she returns full time.

That whole situation was strange though, there were press stories that Anne Kirkbride had announced she was leaving Corrie, which were rebuffed by ITV, then the following day she died. I have the feeling some people on the show were made aware she wouldn't be returning because she was close to death and somehow chinese whispers morphed it into her supposedly taking the decision to leave.
We're about to see Christmas 1993. No edition on Christmas day for the only time since 1987, and it's the year ITV strangely decided to put out an almost regular Saturday schedule that day. Which flopped horribly.

It was also the last time the Street wasn’t shown on Christmas Day. 1993 was the year that ITV famously didn’t bother with an effort for Christmas Day, on the presumption that everyone would be watching BBC1. I believe it got them a telling off by the ITC.

She was due to return but then she took a turn for the worse. Her health deteriorated very quickly.

What for? It's up to ITV what they wanted to show.
Soaps always seem to be shown on Christmas day these days even if it's not the usual day of the week.
If they had a crap schedule that barely anybody watched, you can understand why they got told off. They obviously didn't have to show the soaps, but they could have made more effort than they did.
