It's one of those bains of our lives. Fox News can call themselves Fair and Balanced just as estate agents can call themselves Honest. We all know it's rubbish. The fact is, Katherine, that Fox News are heavily biased - so much so, that a few protestors turned up:

In fact, the other day, I laughed out loud when I saw an incredible break sting they used. To dramatic music, we climbed a tower of words which read:
FAIR
BALANCED
POWERFUL
FOX NEWS
Just tap "fair balanced fox news" into Google and you'll see what people think of it. I'd call it propaganda.

But directly below that...
FAIR REPORT: Fox -- The Most Biased Name in News
Fox News Channel wraps itself in slogans of journalistic objectivity like 'Fair
and balanced' and 'We report, you decide,' but FAIR has found a dramatic right ...

Be very careful. Websites such as ‘FAIR’ may well raise a valid point in terms of their criticism of Fox News Channel, however those very websites are often highly politically motivated themselves.
America seems to find it extremely difficult to find a genuine middle ground in its media. Almost all outlets, whether they be news channels or otherwise have a profound political ideology. FAIR is no different to Fox News channel in its blatant political bias. It’s simply the ideology that differs.
I do tend to have a slight sympathy for Fox News in the sense that they seem to be chastised for daring to let the political right have a say.

That's what gets me about Fox, snu. They have a right to say what they say - the same any anyone else over there does. What disturbs me is that they claim they're neutral, and it looks like some people actually BELIEVE them. There is also the aspect of their pure hypocracy in "News Watch" - where they've never to my knowledge held up their own programmes about bias, but seem all too happy to dish out criticism of every other outlet both over there AND over here.
In fairness to them - there are MANY instances I can recall when they (on the face of things at least) seem to be having balanced debate - what with people from both political persuasions - more so that I think they have in the last couple of years.
------
Sput - Using capitalisation Nick Harvey himself would be proud of

I keep going back to the anchor who said they should nuke Afghanistan. He said that the children would only grow up to hate the USA so that meant it would be OK to do it!
That is not my idea of fair and balanced!
Apparently there was a recent talk between anchors discussing John Kerry where they said he looked like a Frenchman - this is considered a great insult in the US.
Another anchor is supposed to have pointed out how many days it was to the election - but he said it was xxx days to the reelection of George Bush!
Please let us hope Sky News are not sent down this path.

I'm pretty sickened by the racism on there about France. I mean that's what it is! Bill O'Reilly and his ludicrous "Boycott France" campaign for example. What good can come of that? All they'll end up doing is stop buying from French people in America - and perhaps even hurt their own economy just a little more!

IIRC they call it Fair and Balanced to "balance" the US news channel output against the "leftist liberal" majority in the US media.
Brief Diversion
Journalism Purists' (i.e. living in dreamland) Sidenote: Last year there was a huge argument about Fox/Sky/News Corp on the Falmouth journalism forum - a lot of first-years couldn't see anything wrong with Murdoch's plan for world domination, his clear usage of his organs (newspapers etc) to make political statements, criticism of the BBC etc. It's sad but true that we have owners of corporations with huge financial interest commandeering newspapers like the Times and NotW - both of which existed long before NewsCorp - for personal gains. In Private Eye they have a great semi-regular section called "I Sky" in which they highlight NewsCorp hacks promoting Sky products / services like Sky+ and Sky Sports, even promoting crappy Sky One programs as "groundbreaking". Because Murdoch's power reaches far beyond one shore - Australia, Asia, US and UK - he is allowed to get away with a lot that Richard Desmond couldn't possibly hope to with his Express / Star / OK!. It's fascinating to note that The Sun got an explicit mention in a Fox-produced American drama (Buffy - Season 3 "Amends"). The only way Murdoch's empire will fall is if we stop subscribing to Sky, (best multi-channel platform) stop buying the Sun (10million readers), stop watching Fox-produced movies (one of the top studios), refuse to read Harper Collins' books (respected publisher) or kill all his sons and daughters (murder, life imprisonment.
Diversion ends here, thread continues.

Because there clearly is a lefty agenda...tsk. In that case, wouldn't it be more of a superlative and a verb..."Fairer and balancing"?
