The previous thread about this new channel from Visit London (aka the tourist board) has been archived so I've started a new one.
Press release posted:
London TV, a 24 hour TV channel dedicated to what to do and where to go in the world’s most exciting city, broadcasts for the first time on 12 July 2004.

The first channel of its type anywhere in the world, London TV will provide bite-sized entertainment to inspire Londoners to explore their own city and help visitors to make the most of their stay.

Although one of the biggest, busiest and most diverse cities in the world, over half of Londoners (53%) admit they rarely go beyond the few streets around where they live and work with a further third of Londoners (31%) putting this down to being overloaded with information and overwhelmed by the vast possibilities on their doorstep. One in three Londoners (33%) worry constantly they are not making the most of their spare time in the city.

David Campbell, Chief Executive of Visit London said: “If you live in the capital, you often feel guilty that you’re not making the most of everything the city has to offer. Now you don’t even have to get off the sofa to get some inspirational ideas delivered straight to your living room. And you’ll almost certainly learn something new about the city at the same time.”

He added: “London TV provides one of the best ways to deliver up-to-the-minute information in a fast moving city like ours. Television brings the capital to life in a way that a guide book could never do and with digital uptake increasing all the time, there has never been a better time to launch a channel dedicated to the greatest city in the world.”

Broadcast round the clock from a studio overlooking the River Thames, London TV will feature the latest on the capital’s culture, shopping, eating and trips out, with news on the hottest events and special offers, saving viewers both time and money.

Inspiration will also be provided by locals and celebrities who will paint their own personal portraits of the capital by sharing insider tips, secret haunts and their most memorable London experiences. Viewers will also get a chance to see behind the scenes and meet some of the unsung heroes working in London’s attractions, restaurants, theatres, bars and pubs.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: “London is the cultural capital of Europe, a city of more than 7m people, and destination of choice for visitors from the UK and worldwide. With a long and dynamic history and diverse, trend-setting contemporary culture, there is lots going on in the capital, every day of the week. London TV, as well as being a source of ideas, will be a real help to Londoners – and I hope visitors to the capital – getting out and experiencing even more of what London has to offer.”

London TV is created by Visit London and produced by Enteraction TV. Director of Programmes is Claire Richmond. The channel will preview on Channel 166 from July 12th between 3pm and 9pm. From September 2004, or possibly earlier, London TV will be broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on Sky Digital.

To give an idea of the backdrop, this is a photo I took a few weeks ago in the same building that London TV will broadcast from, albeit several floors lower down:

Nice - It's very difficult to get a bad looking shot from the upper floors of CIty Hall

How long do you think it will take before, instead of being the channel described in the press release, it becomes just 24-hour rolling infomercials about JML products?

Just what we need, more London bias on our TV screens...

Oh don't be so negative.

It's on Sky Digital; it's hardly going out across the nation on terrestrial.

If you didn't read this thread chances are you wouldn't know it's there let alone detect the supposed bias. I'm not a Londoner myself but I don't see any harm in it.

If it's a success, good luck to them.

Now, if only Channel M could negotiate some satellite transponder space, and a Sky EPG number . . .

Channel M will be on NTLdigital (in Manchester) soon.

I know that. But London TV is going to available nationally via digital satellite, while Channel M will only
be available via local cable TV, alongside the old style analog reception. Which means I cannot receive
it eitherway, as the multichannel TV services I receive, are from DSAT and DTT, but not digital cable.

And as I live near the Whitefield/Bury boundary, I'm outside the analog reception area of Channel M.

The only service I currently receive from ntl:home is their 1Mbps broadband internet service . . .

I'm not going to make any predictions about London TV... my greatest hits include:
'Nation277 will be all porn and shopping within six weeks' - not so, unless you count one hour a day of shopping;
'These 15 channels are likely to close during 2002' - 14 were still on air at year end (some have closed since, but that's not the point)
'One thinks Chase-it.tv is not going to happen...' (it launched while I was on my way to the computer).

So you won't be hearing any CML predictions for London TV... I'm just gonna let whatever happens to it happen! Smile
