The difference is one of scale. If Sky One is replaced with a 'lite' version (of course Sky may renegotiate all their contracts before going FTA - they may have already done so, we just don't know), you and other people may get SkyDigital or Cable in the short-term, but LONG TERM - you WILL have DTT, we all will as, by 2010 (the date now set for analogue switchoff) Digital Terrestrial will be the basic, standard platform watched by all UK households, unless they are in the minority who choose to subscribe to a pay-tv service in addition.

Therefore, it will be advantageous for any channel that can, to make the transfer to FTA on terrestrial to maximise their viewership. So, while it may mean you defect to a different platform while Sky's pay-TV only programmes are not available FTA, ultimately, you will be able to watch it on DTT (assuming the plan goes through of course - let's not forget we're all speculating at the moment)
