New look studio 9

This was an old presentation studio IIRC, Studio A I think. One of the main reasons for it being used at weekends was because CBBC was broadcast on BBC Two (under the name of But First This , originally). The broomcupboard being the BBC One continuity booth, it wasn't avalible for obvious reasons. Somewhere on MHP Private Parts there is a video from when CBBC got moved to BBC 2 in the early 90's at the last minute. It shows the whole corridor from the broomcupboard, up to the door of the BBC 2 control room and finally into Studio A.



I'm unsure if that studio was referred to as being on the roof. They did actually use the roof top of TV Centre during the summer, from memory I think they both had simular designs originally. It wasn't exactly dicted with the broom cupboard as Studio A became home to all CBBC from 1994.



They moved into TC9 in early 1997 IIRC. I remember the foot coming through the top screen you mention, but I think that was just put there as the screen wasn't working for a while. Actually if I'm right I think they kept the same video wall monitors for years and years as shortly before they moved into TC9 they removed the monitors from Studio A (I can remember Kirsten mentioning it). If They only got rid of them in 2002!!

I think the reason we had a posting about Blue Peter five times a day was it was in a speech - I think it was Nigel Pikard one - which is up on the web somewhere as I read it last week. It was only in as a suggestion - that maybe things don't have to be done the same way they were before - it was not stated as a fact. As Xchange is on five days a week and now has two shows I suspect that Blue Peter will stay as it is for the mean time. Maybe someone knows the URL for the speech?

TC2 being used exclusively for Xchange - that will give the set designer plenty of scope to work with!

There's one thing I'm wondering about CBBCpres- it is recorded? I remember someone posting on here a while back that originally the CBBC continuity wasn't oficilly recorded and archived (hence the clip of Philip Scholfield messing up is from an Xmas tape) up until Andi Peters. Is this true? Was it recorded from Andi Peters onwards, or is it still not properly archived?

It does in a way seem sad to think that aspects of CBBC pres that I remember so fondly might no longer exist.

but they're obviously wrong about
"CBBC's popular magazine show Xchange gets a brand new look this autumn". So it could be just a pre-recorded show that goes out twice a week.

Xchange IS getting a new studio - that's why they're at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith for the next month.

No, it's the same studio - TC2...

Yep - the difference between a set and a studio is massively greater than the difference between a projector and a plasma.

The latter are both devices capable of doing roughly the same thing (displaying a picture!) - the former are completely different things. There are times when it isn't obvious what display technology is in use - projection, plasma, LED screen, CRT etc. - so the confusion (in some cases) between plasmas and projectors is understandable.

A set is the scenery, furniture etc. A studio is the physical space it is installed in, and the technical infrastructure that supports it. There is little to confuse these...

You can have more than one set in a studio, and move the same set between studios.

Yep - same studio - but possibly a new SET !!

Presumably the new changes also mean that TC2 is now back to just providing a single programme for the CBBC channel, rather than running the channel.

Until recently TC2 provided facilities for Nelly Nut, Newsround Lite, UK Top 40, the CBBC channel links and XChange. This meant :
1. it was on-air pretty much continuously - and thus difficult to maintain
2. the channel content was tied in quite seriously to one studio
3. all the programmes coming from the studio had to compromise on rehearsal and pre-record time

Now the CBBC presentation is going to come from TC9, Nelly Nut has its own gallery, Newsround Lite is moving to a custom studio/gallery, TC2 returns to a normal life of just providing a programme (XChange)

It also means that if XChange is off-air for a spell, TC2 isn't required to sit mainly empty just to provide pres links and a single camera news bulletin... (Meaning if XChange gets dropped the studio can be handed back without impacting the rest of the channel...)

Just before Neighbours today, the music in the background was the one from the BBC One Ident Festiva. I also see they have moved The Saturday Show to 9am, So kids with out digital will just watch GMTV untill 9am or if ITV are lucky stick with them for MOM.

Because the Festival music is also a song in its own right. Forever And A Day by State One.
