I have been genuinely surprised by the number of my friends and relatives (with no interest is such things) who have commented on them. I have yet to hear a positive comment.
Ditto!
I almost hated the balloons, and I really hate the dancers. I think they just annoy people. It feels very wrong. The music is too much to be played between every programme, even if it's a different rendition.
I believe that the live action idents should only be used before key programmes (East Enders, etc.), and a silent graphical ident should be used before others, with a clock before the news.
I never got annoyed at the globe, because it was silent. I never got annoyed at the main HTV ident with the music because it wasn't always on between every programme, in-fact it was a joy to see it! It also didn't have pretentious z-list "celebs" doing stupid things or looking naked off in it.
Can anyone predict how many years we will have to wait to see a new look BBC ONE?
On average, it's about four to five years, the previous set lasted 1997-2002. I'd expect them to start thinking about it from 2006 onwards if they are going to change again then but considering how long some of BBC Two's idents ran on for, who knows?
MARKN< yep, you've sprung me! It is worth mentioning that the pants homelife idea was written before I had read other forumers comments. It soon became clear that this style of ident would no longer be relevant on the mainstream channel. A later idea I had was that of a Harlequin as the station logo. Sort of live action I know but restricted to a studio. The Harlequin would be in a red and white diagonally chequed costume. The hands and face would be Gold. A white mask covering the eyes. In one shot he would be juggling with white balls. The entire background would be red. A white chest is beside the Harlequin and the balls are finally thrown into it. Another shot would show the Harlequin laying on a sofa smiling, as if watching television. The background would always be the same. There are many reflective things that could be done with this idea, including some very festive Christmas idents.
globe has gone! It's dead. It's now BBC News - not BBC One. The balloon was a version of the globe, so it's not going to be dragged out again.
I don't count the balloon as a proper globe. It never had the effect of the Mirror Globe, COW or even the LN Floaty mess "globe". It made me depressed every time it came on. I see it as a transition from the globe to the dancers (or "activities" as they would be better described.) It starts with the globe turning into a balloon flying about all over the shop, then the balloon flys over people doing things, and then the focus turns to the people doing stuff and the balloon disappears into nowhere land.
I refuse to believe that the globe has become the symbol for BBC news. It's just resting there before it makes it's glorious comeback to BBC1!!!
The globe is recognised as a symbol of The BBC as a whole, as much as it's recognised as a symbol of BBC1 past. As BBC1 is the flagship station, I think that the globe should still be part of BBC1's presentation.
I really can't understand why BBC ONE doesn't just use a clock or coming next caption to precede programmes; every other network has abandoned this simplistic approach in an attempt to gain more viewers by trying to make their pres 'trendy' and hip. To me, this idea seems flawed, because the pres usually overwhelms and distracts the viewer so much that it causes networks to lose viewers, thus actually defeating the initial objective for presentation!
By using the clock idea, the BBC would be re-attatching itself to its past and also be providing something which is useful in itself. Finally, the clock idea wouldn't necessarily have to be boring/dull - different backgrounds could be used, or the clock could be super-imposed over a blurred still of the next programme's first frame. Finally, for some programmes, a simplistic VT clock could be used in a similar way - giving the channel a clean and 'hands on' feeling. But no more bloody people idents!!!
Oh yeah, btw, heggasy also needs to go urgently - the woman is a cretin of the highest order, obsessed with pulling absolutely everything BBC ONE screens downmarket, and stifling truely innovative ideas.
To be honest, i like the current BBC ONE idents...i am possibly the only person that does. I do agree that BBC ONE needs to bring back the clock. I think a mixture of the current idents and a clock, before the news for example, would work well. Do you think Lorraine would ever consider this?
There are more practical reasons for not having the clock. Digital broadcasts can lag behind by several seconds.
But you're not the only one to like the idents. Some of them are very good, and they certainly are different to anything else on offer.
Its just that last one which was really guff. Apologies to anyone reading in the Bristol natural history unit. Stick to the nature programmes. They are very good.
Would a few seconds difference between analog and digital be a major problem? We are used to this occuring all the time...so i dont think it would matter.
They should use more interesting camera angles for the dances, and one other addition. We start the ident showing the people dancing, and the channel's theme played out in the music, but then we change to a wideshot of the scene with the dancers, and in the background, the BBC Balloon should be floating.
NOOOO! Not you as well Martin! The globe has gone! It's dead. It's now BBC News - not BBC One. The balloon was a version of the globe, so it's not going to be dragged out again.
I liked the balloons alot, only because it was such a fresh, unique idea for TV Presentation, and I like the Dancers too. But for all those who praise the balloon/globe and hate the dancers, that idea was a compromise.
I'm not sure what they should change to next (after the dancers) BBC One is a tricky channel, as it needs to be all things for all people.
Totally CG idents are pretty old fashioned, totally People idents are boring and tacky, so something along the lines of SKYtravel is what I would suggest.
UK landscapes, with ghost like people doing every day things, and some people (non ghost like) doing a particular thing. While the logo animates on screen. Different choice of people's activities, for different people, and different locations.
