Alright. So that means absolutely nobody will have a SD box.

They're not closing the SD service if that's what's being suggested here.

Sky Movies went HD for all movie subscribers as standard on June 1st without the need for the HD pack (now reserved exclusively it would appear for Sky Sports in HD hence it's sudden drop in price).

Sky did change the encryption pairing for the HD channels on Sky a while back and that broke the HD channels on the really old Thomson boxes, if any of them are still in use.

Anyway Sky Movies isn't HD on TalkTalk or BT according to Wiki, and I don't know if it's HD on Sky Go or Now TV either.

But, the SD service will still be broadcast for the thousands of non HD capable boxes out there. I thought that is what was being suggested.

You mean the old Sky+ boxes (that have the lighter onscreen menu, not the dark blue of the HD box).
They're not HD capable AFAIK so nothing changes there, plus I don't think they can do on-demand either, and they've stopped supporting it firmware wise anyway. Any new features/functionality/whatever is now only available on the HD/Q Boxes.

Nobody's said anywhere the SD service is closing. That was a conclusion that's been jumped to on the previous page.

Not sure if it's been asked but does anyone know what's happening to Box Office? Possibly Sky Cinema Box Office? If they do bother to change it.

Plus Sky has made the Sky+HD box, the default/free upgrade.

They did that 5 years ago.

They should still work shouldn't they? I've watched HD channels through a SD TV before. (The experimental ITV HD channel on Telewest). You just won't be able to see the HD.

Yes, the box simply downscales.

How many of those have Sky Movies? I doubt very many at all, and Sky could very easily identify those and sort the problem out.

Sky may be more than happy to swap the non-HD boxes for HD boxes, they quite often do free upgrades usually in exchange for a new contract, as Sky+HD does everything the old Sky+ boxes did and a lot more to boot.

However that being said, it works both ways - as long as Sky is getting money from them each month they're happy, and as long as people can see what they want and what they're paying for they're also happy, so there's no incentive for those people to upgrade.

Sky Movies live channels on NOW TV are 720p on Apple TV, officially SD on other devices, but some are outputting at 720p.

My bad. I read your post as asserting that it was a recent move, apologies!
