Is Sky News Having a Presentation Crisis?

Since the new look was launched back in September Sky News appears to be having a crisis on presentation.

On Screen Graphics

The opening titles have no link with the on screen graphics through the rest of the hour. They use non-caps lock and just have no link.

The one screen graphics are harsh on the eyes when watching (especially first thing in the morning), they convey little information and as everyone knows far to big. The policy on having everything in capitals make the information displayed hard to read. (non-caps lock letters are easier to read, they way they were created!). It would be easier to read if everything was not in bold.

When doing a live report in the top left where they have where the report is coming from is always different, sometimes the white background is translucent and other its solid white. The policy on the writing in the red blob appears to be (apart from during the sport) make the word(s) as big as possible.

They used to always have special graphics for when they was an important speech given with the main points in easy to red text but now all we get is ‘NEWS ALEART -  THE PRIMMINISTER GIVE PARTY Speech' this was displayed through the speech

Sky News Active

The current look (the blue one) as no visible link to the current look of Sky News (apart from the logo). If the new look News Active is as it is shown in the Sky Guide then that still has no link with the current look. The writing is not all in capitals the back colour of a mix of white and blue is also different to the current look. The whole look and feel of the Active service it different.

The Adverts

The Sky News First adverts where they show all the major stories of the previous month has no link with current on screen look nor do the adverts where the presenters talk about working at Sky. Both of these adverts show text is non-caps lock. These also have a different look and feel to them.

The overall look of Sky News appears to be a shambles. It was once easy and friendly to view but now looks like a red top newspaper only interested in breaking the news (with little follow up on information) and popular news.

Come on Sky News you can be so much better

I think the opening titles are pretty similar to some of the other presentation. For a start there's the logo. The bumpers used are based on the titles too and the music is pretty much the same.

Agreed. The graphics are **** . I can't understand why their have to be red, too. It would work better if they switched the astons around. By this I mean having 'breaking news' et al coming up on the red tag on the side, and only adding the red tag when there is a coming up, breaking news, news alert, next, etc. The top of the aston could then have the main point of the story, where previously the red blob would have carried this information. It'd look so much better.

I'm not sure there is an sort of policy with the blob. Some of the time it looks ok, words look well aligned and it's ok on the eye, but sometimes they have giant letters and just fill the thing as much as possible. That's why a set number of blobs would work better. They could create blobs for breaking news, coming up, next etc. and then only use the blobs for these things and go back to the line above the aston for just writing normal stories.

>They used to always have special graphics for when they was an important speech given with the main points in easy to red text but now all we get is ‘NEWS ALEART -  THE PRIMMINISTER GIVE PARTY Speech' this was displayed through the speech

I think it was more like 'Tony Blair delivers speech to Party Conference', but I know what you mean. Previously the rolling ticker would illustrate the main points of the speech, now it just sits there until the end - as if it wasn't obvious enough what Blair was doing standing in front of a microphone. Special graphics for speeches were only used towards the end of the previous graphic set's life. There is no variation with the current graphics, basically because they are so bland and plain that it is difficult to do anything with them.

Well the original SNA was based on the website, with the orange, blue and white colour scheme. The new one would look a lot better if that too was modelled on Sky News Online. It doesn't look totally dissimilar to the rest of the channel. We'll have to wait and see what it's like in action before making any judgements. The original designed banded about for the first incarnation of SNA weren't too similar to the final version that we see today, so it's more a case of wait and see than anything.

I honestly don't think that you can say the adverts don't link to the channel because it doesn't use captials. Some of the old 'Witness the Event' trailers looked nothing like the on-screen presentation at the time. I don't think you have to go to the extent of making everything look the same, that'd just be boring.

I am hoping they might be planning to do something when the new SNA launches, although It seems like it's hard for them to make the effort anymore.

The graphics relaunch has been a disaster, I'm frankly surprised viewers haven't migrated to News 24. The launch graphics actually looked much better than the ones at the moment. If you remember the launch graphics were toned down after everyone complained, but looking back at them now, they actually looked a lot better - just too big. If they had made the launch graphics a bit smaller but kept the style then it wouldn't be too bad. I just really hope they change them and make them a little bit more professional on the 11th.

The newswall could be better used, too. It seems to always be stuck on that awful setting with lots of feeds playing out on it, and makes the studio look really tiny and cramped. It was better with the maps on it and different colours.

The side of the studio with the rotating globes on looks **** . It's so bloody dull in comparison to what they had originally. I'll try and find a capture of the launch day shots they were using for the sports presenter - it was massively better than the dull and plain background they've got at the moment.

Forgot about them! they do look cr*p don't they.

before th launch we were told to expect a freash new look but all weve got is the same Sky News. they had the newsroom camera view when going to a break and the moving camera at the top of the hour, but them seam to have gone back to how it was beore just with large graphics which are harsh on the eye and no program identity. (apart from Live at 5, and news at ten (does sunrise still exist?) the 9oclock new has gone so has sky news today)

I do see what you mean about the adverts but i do feel that apart from the logo there is very little connection to the channel identity.
