I think many people are being too harsh, specially those generalising many aspects of the last decades of British presentation saying it sucks.. it can be improved, but it doesn't sucks.

Said that

-BBC One desperately needs a new look
- BBC Two is amazing
-ITV needs to sort out its idents, but especially the other aspects of the presentation, especially for ITV2 and 4, which are still stuck with the 2013 endboards etc.
- Channel 4 needs new idents in style of the current one or something else entirely (still with the same logo), but especially new individual tunes for each ident.
- Channel 5 is OK, but its idents could be better, they can experiment so much with simple CGI..

I like Sky channels pres, but overall Sky One needs new idents

I also think Channel 5 was so much better as "Five", more distinctive and so on.

I like the current logo , but I think along with many that the "FIVE" circle era idents were underrated and much better compared to what came after, that red logo boredom I mean

In fact Ben Shepherd is underrated full stop.

On a similar note, Kate Garraway doesn't get the credit she deserves on here. There's a good reason she's survived through every iteration of ITV Breakfast over the years. And she's presented rolling news before so certainly has hard news credentials too.

I think the criticism that they can be a bit silly is justified but at the same time there are days when you don't want hard news and having that bit of fluff is good to balance things out.

Channel 5 is in a good place at the moment, I know many on here look down on it but I personally think it has plenty of good shows, the Ben Fogle Chernobyl doc was a highlight last week for example and considering they operate on a fraction of the budget of BBC Two and Channel 4, they punch above their weight.

The Pledge on Sky News was brilliant. Actually gave room for debate on the channel (away from Press Preview etc.) as opposed to constant rolling coverage and the contributors seemed to enjoy it, making it more like a roundtable podcast for the viewer.

I think I'll be waiting some time for someone who agrees with me on that one.

Great thread for the last hurrah of the forum! Most of mine have been mentioned, but here we go anyway...

- I quite liked the a lot of the 2006 ITV rebrand and think the launch ITV1 emotion idents were better than what replaced them.

- As above but with BBC One in 2004. I know they're revered by lots here as the pinnacle of pres, but for me the balloons were quite stuffy and serious with essentially the same tone dramatic to introduce a myriad of programme genres. I think they were a good bridge between the old silent globe idents and the modern era, but the dancers were a very welcome change.

- I don't get why the 1999 News 24 countdown gets such plaudits, is it just because it was the first? There have been much better iterations since in my view.

- I really liked the 2007 BBC Two rebrand and thought it was a clever evolution on the 2s, but feel it has a bad rep on here for some reason.

- I don't mind the levels of simulcasting we get on BBC News these days at all. It's pretty standard practice across the continent/world and the bespoke bulletins/coverage are a luxury of yesteryear.

- I like that you can hear a diverse range of voices on continuity now, regional/diverse accents used to be the preserve of Channel 4 and digital channels trying to be quirky. They're now everywhere and I think that's fab.

I'm sure there's more but I think that'll do anyone.

BBC News 24 'Flags' - I still miss them:

Indeed. Also, the BBC World score was utterly majestic and magnificent and I only wish I had a high quality copy of the music:

It's such a beautiful piece of music - yet so dramatic. I can't help but feel like this would be perfect for World Service Radio.

I think the (second version) LWT videowall is fantastic. All the punch and energy idents into big weekend shows should have, yet nowhere to be seen on ITV since.

I thought the channel looked really classy in 2007 and the concept had so much scope for development. Then the tinkering started, culminating in the 2009 mess, and it all turned sour for me.

An opinion I also have is that I feel Channel 4 really needs a rebrand. They're current look has been around for 6 years with no change.

I feel that Sky should do another corporate revamp, and drop the pill shape they have had for 10 years, a design I have never liked. I feel that it makes the channels lose their personality, and the logos look very generic. I'd like Sky to go back to the 1998-2011 style where each channel/channel group had their own looks, and this formula led to some of the best idents on UK TV, such as the 2008 idents for Sky 1/2/3 & the 1998 look for Sky Premier.

I also feel that Sky should close Sky Atlantic & Sky Witness and roll it's content onto Sky One, to strengthen the channel's output.

I've never really warmed to Channel 5's new look. The blocks rising up remind me of London Live and that never a good sign.

The five piece logo is OK, but I don't think it works when it's small.

I still think that the only decent branding package ever to air on that channel was the original 1997 set, complete with the five bar candy stripes.

Oh and the news... Still live in hope that one day somebody will go live with a modern version of their original presentation.

I think the original 5 logo and the 'five' eras were the best for them visually. The later 'FIVE' was pretty good too, but the Desmond-era 5 was bloody hideous in my opinion, looked very cheap.

Nothing beats the original 5news look either in my opinion, incredibly slick and was laid to rest far too quickly.

RE: Channel 5
I completely agree there. I think it is a shame they dropped the bars, as I think they could have been more memorable had they kept them. In my opinion, "five" look was OK to start with, but became better later on in it's life when the idents became more creative. The "FIVE" idents were excellent and are some of my favourite idents.

I agree that the 2011 look was very bland, and the logo was terribly generic and boring. I always found it absolutely sadistic when Dirty Desmond constantly ridiculed the "FIVE" name, and I wouldn't be surprised if he bought it just to rebrand the station.

The 2016 look was good in my opinion, although they should have added a logo.

I do like the most recent idents, simple yet effective, putting the focus on the channel brand, which helps people to remember what channel they are watching.

Same. Piers on GMB REALLY ticks me off and he's the reason why I'm more of a This Morning guy.

Sky News Press Preview is an interesting debate sometimes. But it would be better if it was longer, so Anna Jones and Anna Botting wouldn’t have to keep cutting the guests off to 'move on' or go to ads.
It usually runs approx 22.37-22.47 and 22.51 to 22.54.
