It's Latin and for the benefit of those amongst you who have never been to Lat 'It is the mark of a fool to persist in error'.

This site is educational even if on occasion it seems to be running on frozen treacle.

Meridian seems to have inherited a new announcer tonight - sounding vaguely Carltonesque - 'And Micawber is coming up at 9 - don't miss it!' Doesn't seem to like mentioning the word Meridian though - don't tell me the duel region announcing machine has broken down here too? Wink

One of the female announcers on YTV,TTTV and Border is also a regular freelancer on Carlton Central - in fact she is on tonight.

Incidentallyit's two years on 1st January that Carlton Central cut the number of full time announcers. In fact I do believe they now only have on full time voice and all others are freelancers.

The announcers here work long shifts with live announcements from 12.30pm until 0.30. The following mornings announcements are then recorded.

Therefore only one announcer per day (apart from the London overnight announcer who is live during weekdays but recorded at weekends)

Mmmmm!  I'll have to think about 'vaguely Carltonesque' and decide if it's a compliment or not!

Yes, lots of old freelances get the odd bit of work over Christmas and New Year.

And sorry Phil, I didn't do any Latin in my youth, just Welsh, Spanish and French, in that order.

Now THAT comment ought to solve a few problems for all the people who keep Messengering me to find out who I am!

Hah! I'm not the only one who hates Maggie Mash!!!! See?

Oh, and I mentioned months ago (years ago on the NotBBC board) that her surname was Mash. No-one believed me. See again?

And yes, Helen Aitken is the anno that has been at YTV since the early 90's. That clip surprised me at first -- it's so clear!!!!

Maybe that's the trouble with the Leeds centre -- the announcers are too muffled?? Helen certainly sounds as if there's a blanket over the mike when she's on the TV, in comparison with that clip. I've noticed the same with Bob Preedy.

Maybe they muffle the sound to stop glasses shattering around the North when Maggie is announcing lol...

It has to be said, the Leeds centre is not the best when it comes audio. A friend from ntl tells me that they have a unique pre-emphasis on the mic audio, not the usual 50uS. It sounds to me like it's set to something like 75uS and resembles the settings as used by the yanks on their dodgy quality stations.

There always has been a very distinctive 'Yorkshire sound' on their continuity mike. It does sound more bassy than other stations and not as clear -- it was quite a shock to the system to hear Karen Petch on Tyne Tees when she first appeared as an in-vision announcer after being used to hearing her voice on YTV -- almost like a different announcer, hearing her properly for the first time!!. I don't know why they do it -- it must be deliberate, as I wouldn't think they'd have the same circuit as 1986! -- but you can tell it a mile away.
