When they uploaded all of High Road, I remember there was a clip of Thames continuity going into an episode of the show, and YouTube actually detected what episode it was and had a 'Click here to view full episode' link. But while the full episode upload had the 1985 'Scottish Television' frontcap, the off-air upload as you can see still has the old 1970s logo 'STV' frontcap.

Reminds me of when STV had uploaded every episode of Take The High Road to YouTube- on the first few episodes after the introduction of the generic look you could still hear the jingle of the previous endcap underneath it, as if it had been edited onto the tape at the last minute. Makes me wonder how much notice the companies had that they had to use the generic design endcaps if they were having to edit them in after programmes were completed?

I’m slightly confused as to what you mean by the “jingle” on the endcap - I had thought STV’s endcaps were always “still and silent”, like those of most of the ITV companies.

I think it was a stipulation of the 1989 generic look that endcaps could not be animated nor accompanied by any jingle, and had to adhere to a standard design. This, I suspect, was primarily aimed at Central who had effectively moved their “ident” to the end of programmes when frontcaps were discontinued.

STV had an animated endcap with a jingle for the first few months of 1989. You could see it when Challenge repeated the first series of Fun House a few years back (and it was on the Feb-August 1989 High Road editions when they were on YouTube).

Clearly this endcap was on some of the September 1989 episodes of Take The High Road, but they edited the ITV Generic style endcap over it at the last minute (but left the jingle there).

Central had one aswell, but network said that was a no no, so said companies had to change it.

Then I think it took until 2004 until we had an animated endcap on ITV again (unless you count a very brief period there was an animation on the Carlton UK Productions/Central endcap- which is on the final series of Bullseye, I remember it being on some comedy show around the same time too), and I don't think we had a jingle again until the ITV Studios endcap after the 2013 revamp.

Generic font is fine (bear in mind Corrie uses it even for the credits on the opening scenes of an episode), but yeah, they should be allowed to pick their own backgrounds. Probably the rooftops in Corrie's case since that's what was used for most of the show's history, prior to the first generic credit style in the hearts era.

In the 2002-2006 era, when most programmes used one of a set of coloured generic backgrounds, Emmerdale had a custom background of the Dales whilst Corrie stuck with a generic blue background.

I think it was around 2010-2013 (after the programme went HD and new credits were introduced) that Corrie used custom end credits with various views of the street. There was a separate set for night time episodes too.

I agree that they should use something similar today.

It was before they went HD- that style of credits started in 2007 and ran until the ITV relaunch in 2013.

Don't forget they had this style as well:

It really doesn't help that the generic style is so bland, it's just white text on a black background. It's not like any other UK channel uses generic credits, or shows any signs of doing so, so it really stands out that ITV not only do it, but have stuck with it for 18 years.

Smartphone capture from the first episode to use the new endcap; (September 6th, 1989), (sorry, couldn't capture on Demand)

I imagine this is the first time the new endboard's appeared on Classic Corrie since its original transmission? (I say because of the plastering of endboards during the Plus repeats). Really love the yellow Granada symbol on purple gradient background, pity they botched it with the actual (rejected) Generic ident.

I expect this was used until October 1st, 1990, when the first "stripe" ident was used, (though I could be wrong).
