Now chopper tornado chasing is second nature to stations in Oklahoma City. Its rarely done in other cities. You do see it in Dallas sometimes.

Both of these stations were effected by whats termed as a TORNADO EMERGENCY. Then is when a tornado is on the ground moving through a urban area.
These TV stations do incredible work informing the public of dangerous storms.
WTVA-Tupelo Mississippi (The meteorologist is a bit intense. But he is in an really small market. He is know to be a bit of an jerk to his co-workers on air during tornado coverage. He had to apologise at one point)
KSN Wichita KS - The station had to abandon their broadcast. Its a bigger market. You can hear the hail smashing into the building.

WOW the footage on KCBS is amazing. They are trying to rescue the horses from the fires. Even the tv camera people are helping to put them on the trailers. WOW. Its so sad.

KABC has their 2 choppers Air7 and Air7HD up in the air. And likely KNBC is using their 2 choppers Bravo and Alpha.

No, they are much too high to fan the flames. Because of camera stabilizers and powerful zooms, it's sometimes easy to forget just how far away they are (unless a firefighting helicopter or even a DC-10 air tanker passes between them and the fires, reminding us of the true perspective).
Think of it this way: If a police helicopter flies over your house, you won't feel any wind.

The choppers are typically miles away from the fires as the air crews need the airspace to drop water. So this is not any issue. The nose cameras are extremely power zoom lenses.
The 7 SkyMap now becoming standard on most news choppers is invaluable, especially during these wild fire coverage period becase it shows the surrounding streets and roads. One of the coolest things is if the live pictures are at night or covered in wildfire smoke, they can switch to a satellite imagery overlay so you can see in the dark or whats burning under the smoke.

This is amazing so it has to be posted again. KAKE Wichita, Kansas a city in the heart of tornado alley debuted this huge set several years ago. It no longer exists, current station management nixed it when they created a new set. Apparently this video was created for an awards submission for a studio design award. One of the impressive parts of the studio and the station set-up is the ability to isolate which parts of the viewing area they can broadcast to and for the meteorologist to control what is seen on screen as they would control the multiple sources available.
