Binge-watch continues! Now at 16th October 1989 and Martin Platt has prosthetic mumps! Looks genuine too. I didn’t know Corrie did prosthetics for regular (non disaster/calamity/rail crash) stories.
In the last couple of episodes, we've seen the window on inside of the cafe set, possibly the first ever time it's been seen? Certainly the first time in the ITV3 run (though there was an episode in 1988 which began with a shot of the cafe filmed from the outside of the window).
I know they started filming the cafe from that angle quite frequently later on, certainly after Roy took it over.
We've also seen the outside of the cafe in some recent ITV3 episodes, even though it doesn't in any way match the interior. Detatched building, no dead ended side alley shared with the old Kabin next door, front door rather than a side entrance etc. We saw Des & Raquel going into a side door entrance to the flat that shouldn't even exist.
Sound very quiet and muffled on both of today's episodes too. Followed by a massive spike in volume for the trailers and adverts that scared the hell out of me.
Random observation, James: I note you refer to “The Kabin” in your post, above. And the spelling with a “k” is also how I remember it.
Funnily enough, in the 1989 episode I watched today, Rita was collecting newspaperboy delivery bags handed back by her staff who’d just finished their rounds, and the spelling was “Cabin”.
Did it only become Kabin with a K when the shop relocated to Coronation Street itself? Or is it just a continuity error?

Edit: is “Jim’s Cafe” the self-same site as “Roy’s Rolls”? If so, the internal layouts and geometry is entirely different.
I'm not 100% sure to be honest, you never saw the outside of the old shop to see what the sign said (apart from one occasion in 1989, where you didn't see the sign anyway).
It's never made clear on the show what happened to the old Kabin (or Cabin ) either, even though we regularly see the door to it in the cafe.

I'm 99% certain the Kabin spelling with a C is an error. I've always known it to be spelt with a K. This article features a map of Weatherfield from 1976 which spells it with a K.
And Jim's Cafe was on Rosamund Street, next-door to the old Kabin. IIRC Roy took it over and changed the name to Roy's Rolls, but the cafe moved soon after to its current location on Victoria Street which is when the layout changed. (Or possibly he changed the name after the move - not quite sure now.)
10000th episode reveals the death of Dennis Tanner but also does heavily feel like a Rita exit - all the buildup feels like a Rita Swansong and everything scream Rita Farewell.
