Problem here is we skipped the network part of the American Network/Affiliate model.

Without the high spending bright lights of a network with a budget that reflects the single digit EPG number all you've got is a poor attempt at local news.

I still think that something could be salvaged from this mess if the local TV franchisees jointly put out their entire 1900-2300 primetime block to a competitive tender for a general entertainment service with guarantees that programme spending on that block would meet a threshold of an amount I do not have the skill or knowledge to define myself!

Considering one of the original proposals from Channel 5 was for a National/Local set up maybe a simulcast of Channel 5 with local opt-outs might work...

In reality for an affordable local news service something similar to the original C5 idea of concentrating mainly on short hourly updates in between programming would have been for the best.

We've talked about this weeks flooding in other threads and how it hasn't got the coverage perhaps it should have done nationally, but this is where Local TV should be able to step in. Not once though have I thought to look towards them for information.

Someone at these stations need to think outside of the box. I mean they seriously cant think that reading the headlines from a bush is a good idea?

Where's s the pairings with unis and colleges? Why can't their studios be used to record news updates?

If media students see a local news break, knock up an article for the website, get that tweet out there. Where possible get on air live. Even if its just you looking into camera you can read statements, get a fellow student to source phone interviews, eyewitnesses.

It's like, come on guys!

That’s TV did for a couple of their stations...until they got kicked out, that is.

That's Hampshire was initially based at Queen Mary's Sixth Form college in Basingstoke.

I think the Solent area 'That's' was at a Portsmouth Tech College.

Neither That's Ltd or the colleges seemed to benefit !

Oh right, well that's a shame things didn't work out but given how the companies operate I shouldn't be surprised.

That's Oxfordshire I believe was evicted from the college they worked out of as well.

Oh, yes, some of the expulsions were a result of the colleges discovering the 'slave labour' style salaries I think ?

What was Big Centre TV (now Birmingham TV) started life in Walsall at the Goldmine Centre, as a so-called "Walsall Studio School".

Now the ownership has changed they've jacked that in and moved to the Gas Street Basin which last I checked they still insist on using as a backdrop for the local news...

There are the legalities to think of here, too. Students, by definition, are not (yet) qualified. You can't have students "knocking up articles for the website" or "getting the tweets out there" when they are not 100% au fait with the legal requirements around reporting, particularly with regard to criminal offences.

Students have also, presumably, got studying to do that doesn't involve working for free for a local TV outfit. If the only way you can sustain your commercial local news service is to use free labour from unqualified students, turn the tx off and find another line of business.

With proper editorial oversight and workflows in place, I do not see why not.

When "That's Scotland" was "That's Edinburgh", I'd often see reports presented only from the angle of the charity/advocacy group or campaign organisation that had clearly contacted the channel or sent them a press release. Whatever the issue or policy they were campaigining for or against, the local TV report would rarely show a comment or reply from the govt body or council being accused of wrongdoing. Not even a mention of them being contacted for comment.

Truly rubbish reporting, but the truth is I couldn't be bothered complaining to anyone as I knew nobody was watching. I could only bear a couple of minutes viewing every month or so.
