Black music? who said r 'n' b was for black people?

I am going to agree with Phil on this one.
BBC Radio 1 seems to play nothing but black music anyway, and then what do they do, they set up BBC 1Xtra, dedicated to black music. We also have BBC Asian Network. I know it sounds stupid, but it does seem as if the white people who enjoy NORMAL music, seem to be left in the dark by the BBC.

As I am bored and also bored with BBC1's incessant lack of originality, I have devised a fantasy schedule for EVERY weekday. The sort of thing I would like to see on the channel. Let me know your views. Firstly, i have moved the news back to 9pm as it creates more diversity with the timings after 9.30pm. there is nothing more annoying than watching a film (such as Face/Off) which was shown last Thursday, between the news.
MONDAY
7pm A Quiz show such as A Question of Sport
7.30 Real Story
8.00pm EastEnders
8.30 A New Sitcom that the Beeb has enough courage to stick with.
(And also keeps in the same time zone for the entirety of the run)
9.00pm BBC Nine O Clock News
9.30 Cutting It/Hustle/waking the dead etc.
10.30 The Monday film: Shown in it's wonderful uninterrupted entirety
12.30 That Was the Day: A brand new daily news review programme looking at the day's major news stories and having them discussed with a panel of politicians and public figures. Also getting the publics opinions and feedback aswell.
1.30 News 24
TUESDAY
7pm Watchdog
7.30 EastEnders
8.00 Holby City
9.00 BBC Nine O Clock News
9.30 A comedy sketch show such as Little Britain or Revolver
10.00 Panorama: Every Tuesday at 10pm without fail (say for
disaster)
10.45 An American Drama series such as the X-Files or Chicago Hope.
(Something current obviously but kept in this regular slot)
11.30 The Late Night Film
1.00ish That Was The Day
2.00 News 24
WEDNESDAY
7pm The Wednesday Film
9pm BBC Nine O'Clock News
9.30 A Life of Grime or Food Police or something similar
10.00 55 Degrees North or Silent Witness etc.
11.00 American sitcom series (In a regular consistent slot)
11.25 A Sports Chat and Magazine show with John Inverdale
12.15 Real Story (Repeat from Monday)
12.45 That Was the Day
1.45 News 24
THURSDAY
7pm A Quiz show such as Judgemental moved from Daytime.
(This is quite an intelligent Quiz and could fare well in primetime)
7.30 EastEnders
8.00 Changing Rooms/DIY Sos/Ground Force. (Only one such show on at this time every week. No other makeover shows would appear during the week)
8.30 Massive Nature or such like.
9.00 BBC Nine O'Clock News

12.15 That Was the Day

When Panarama is missing from schedules such as Summer breaks etc. Hard hitting documentary series' would be shown. When a drama series ended on a Monday or Thursday then a special one off investigative programme such as The Secret agent would be shown for one week before a new series of drama began the following week. I also think there is a place for classic comedies to be shown but series by series on one fixed slot per week and not just as schedule fillers. Top of the Pops would be moved to 5pm on Saturdays and the midweek lottery draws would be announced at the end of the wednesday film or after the Nine O Clock News. People just want to know the numbers and not make a song and dance about it. Please let me know your opinions on what I think is OK BBC1 vieweing. Oh, a simpler, less themed and less red ident format would be used. There would be less self advertising and more quality put into trailers rather than the occasionally obscure stuff going out now. Film 2004 would be on at about 11pm EVERY Sunday!

Doesn't seem that you've done that much apart from move things around a little, altough to be fair, its a fairly good mix of shows. However, I think the news should stay at 10 as it is well established now - I really can't imagion it being moved back now - it actually won't feel right. Also its better at 10 as it means drama at 9 which is much better and lets face it they show more dramas at 9 than they do films.
I think the idea of only having one makeover show on at anyone time is good, although again they don't tend to have more than two on now do they - I think they are showing DIY SOS and Ground Force at the moment and they are house and garden so not the same thing anyway.
Not sure about the idea of the news review programme, I think there is enough news on anway, and you've got Newsnight on BBC Two and then News 24 overnight too - I can't see a need for it.
But, saying all that, on the whole it was OK!

Just to add my comments
Radio 1 and its "Black Music" for a start the music IS Black Music. That's what it is called! It is NOT R'nB or "Street" - it is "Black" Music. Like it or not, Black Music does have similarities with other genres of music, however, the type of music which 1Xtra plays is Black Music - intended for a Black Audience - if shouting and fading within tracks is what the culture likes then its what they get. - if you dont like it - dont listen to it or buy some CDs.
On topic of original post - it is true that TV programmers purposely add in coloured actors just to "Even it up" - If a programme is seen to be all white then it is NOT PC - however if a programme is all asian or black (Kumars, 3 non blondes etc) then thats all great - however, we cant have one rule for one and another rule for the others.
I don't have a problem with programmers purposely having coloured characters - so long as they are not out of place - for example if an area is chosen to be the new set of a programme was renouned for having very few coloured people - then there should be very few ,if any, coloured people in the show - if it is to be a very racist area then lots more coloured people needed as the racism would not be so high if there were fewer ethnic minorities.
Also, it is true that the BBC could not launch a radio station such as BBC White Network - the reason being is there would be no point - White people are generally much more capable of being open minded and some, may like asian music - also, the BBC has a responsibility as public service broadcaster to broadcast to everyone who pays their fee (no comments please) - so if there is a need for an Asian network then an asian network is set up - the fact that there are tonnes of BBC Radio Networks out there not specifically aimed at a certain creed or colour then these are, normally, the stations which the White people would listen to.
This is like saying Classic FM - is the star wars theme 'really' Classical Music? - I think not! - But it is played so the station appeals to a younger audience.
In terms of BBC One's schedule - the reason each day is fairly similar is the same reason a radio station has a music policy. People will become aware of the type of shows that appear at a certain time each night - so if they like this then they know that at every night at around 7ish there may be a homelife show such as Holiday or Ground Force or the like - then at 8 possibly a more factual or drama show and at 10 the news. Market research shows that generally this idea works - however keyword is generally and BBC One is a prime example of when things go wrong.
Hopefully Grade will get BBC One sorted out and we can all enjoy a RED FREE ZONE - BBC One
Ok off my soapbox now. And Calm.

You're missing the issue. The issue is whether this black music features on Radio 1 too heavily for there to be a separate 1Xtra network. I say it doesn't, mainly because what people think is "black music" played on Radio 1 simply isn't. But anyway.
Some would say that is a rather sweeping, bordering on racist statement. Open mindedness is not, and never will be, based on skin colour or ethnicity. I'm somewhat puzzled over why you'd genuinely think that to be the case.
Oh please. In the general sense, classical music does not have to be written hundreds of years ago to be in the classical music chart. It will appear on Classic FM because it is deemed to be classical music, not because a teenager will think "Ooooh, they might play Star Wars any minute now". Vanessa Mae is accepted to be classical music in the way that Destiny's Child is apparently R'n'B - which was ONCE rhythm and blues. More akin to your country dogs dying than a 1Xtra playlist.

I agree with you, and you are right to stress generally ! It also works the other way of course; I'm not keen on makeover shows and the factual stuff like Food Police or indeed Eastenders, Holby CIty or Casualty, so I know when NOT to tune in, which sadly is most of the time these days! They can't even get the Friday night comedy slot worked out - yesterday it was Celebrity Mastermind (oh please save us from these "Celebrity" shows) followed by yet another repeat of Only Fools and Horses. In the slot often used by HIGNFY, perhaps something a little more intelligent, a repeat of ANY other comedy, or some BBC2 comedy transfers could be found - particularly over the summer.
Michael Grade sorted out BBC1 before, sadly it's not wholly within his new remit to get directly involved, but I imagine he'll use hiws powers in other ways to get it sorted.

I was waiting for someone to come up with that. I don't think it hurts to have that little sub-debate which pops up once every so often - it's not taking over, and I'm sure you can keep up with the main discussion plus a little added bonus for good luck.

Das, it was not meant as a racist comment - it was a comment - i dont mean that all blacks are not open minded and all whites are - a lot of whites arent - what I am saying is that Black Music is what a lot of Blacks listen to - wheras white people dont only listen to white artists but also listen a lot to the RnB and Hip Hop culture and not just white pop music - many of my friends are coloured and their entire cd collection does not house anymore than 1 white artist - this is what was meant by my comment and I hope i have cleared things up - i suppose i shouldnt have used open minded but Tolerant - we are very tolerant of other cultures (one reason Scotland has nearly a zero racism problem).
Clearer? - I hope so otherwise ill just delete my post and start over.

No, a little sub-debate is fine, but some pages here are dominated by the radio1 debate so far and perhaps it merits its own thread? Or a continuation of http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5658&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Other people may join in the Radio 1 debate if they're not drawn to follow the main point of this thread?
