They seem to be outside an awful lot. When are they in the studio?

They're probably trying to do as much outside or on location as possible.

The Spanish version of RT is streaming what I assume is one of the beauty shots on http://www.justin.tv/actualidadrt at the moment, for some reason.

And now it's streaming this:

The music in the background is agreeably dull, and doesn't loop smoothly.

Nice that the Ski Sunday theme gets an outing in the funny bits of the day montage - some nice graphics with the rings there too. Also a gorgeous closing to the show promoting the mens downhill - stick a "2" there somewhere and you've a much better ident.

I wonder if this approach will set the standard for things like major games and Wimbledon in the future? I guess it's a reaction to how Clare performs best as a sports broadcaster too.

Well they did things in a very similar way in 2010 IIRC - lots of on-location work for, particularly, the mountain sports. I remember (I think) Clare Balding on skis at the opening of one of the shows. So not new as far as the Winter Olympics is concerned. I think a big studio with lots of views is perfect for Wimbledon and the summer games, but roving around at the (slightly lower key) winter games, especially when their studio is basically a shoe-box!

Did they do as much stuff just outside in the general Olympic Park space at 2010 though?

There wasn't really an Olympic park though in 2010 - the indoor arenas were across Vancouver and they had a studio overlooking a harbour IIRC, which I think had an outdoor balcony itself which they used quite a lot. They also had another studio in the mountains but as said above it was rarely used and instead much was hosted outdoors with people passing by all the time, so I guess they were in the heart of things.

The Torino studio wasn't very big either IIRC, but I think they mainly stayed inside. This studio does look particularly small though and I'd have thought the BBC would be relatively high up on the pecking list when it comes to studio space. I wouldn't say the space they have got has been used that efficiently at all though.

Looks likes the studio is very much a back up.

I don't think there was a general 'Olympic park' though, I think this is the first Winter Olympics in memory that had anything like the Sochi park. In previous Winter Olympics the venues much more spread out across the various cities. The £600m stadium is only being used for the opening and closing ceremonies Shocked
They barely used the IBC Vancouver studio in 2010, iirc that overlooked a large river in Vancouver rather than a venue and I think there was only 1 sports arena close to it.

Does anybody know what other broadcasters are in those big blue temporary box studios? The park itself is very lifeless.

Yes I'm surprised thy haven't bothered to tart them up a bit, similar were used by international broadcasters at London and they looked ok but the views of the stadium were very restricted.
