There are several separate threads for the coronavirus.

The BBC World thread should always remain a cocktail of “anything goes”. Or just a cocktail........

........what time is it......?

Apologies, my post was meant in jest (thought the emoji gave it away).

And as for the time, it’s always 5 O’Clock somewhere in the world.

I don’t particularly see much of World News but am I right in thinking with Rico’s departure, Mariko Oi is/will now be anchoring a bit more from Singapore?
And you’d like to think due to an absence of content to fill the slots with they may be a few less editions of Sport Today in the next few weeks.

By jove! You’re right! It’s 5pm somewhere. 🍸

😉

Mariko has so-far filled-in for Rico alongside Sharanjit Leyl. However, when Mariko goes on maternity leave, Karishma Vaswani will probably become the second presenter. They might even move Sameer Hashmi across from Dubai for a few months. Or Yogita Limaye from India?

I do apologize if this has been discussed previously.

Does anyone know why the words ‘chief’ ‘lead’ or ‘senior’ titles have now vanished from Babita Sharma’s social bios when referring to her role at BBC World News.

Was it ever official?

Hwu Edwards is the overall chief anchor for BBC News both domestic & world

Yes he is, my point was, with the help of James World News was to question this claim...and to ask if it was ever made official?

Sounds like they’re giving titles out instead of pay raises, like at financial firms where after two years everyone becomes a Vice President. If she was chief presenter wouldn’t she be on during the weekdays? I think key ones at BBC World based on exposure and anchoring recent high profile events would be Katty Kay and Christian Fraser.

Typically at the US the evening news anchor is considered the chief anchor and the face of the news division, even though they aren’t on the air the most or highest paid (morning show anchors typically are paid the most). At ABC News despite hosting Good Morning America George Stephanopoulos is the chief anchor and is mentioned during special reports during the introduction.

Then there are places like NBC where they have Richard Engel whose addressed as their chief foreign correspondent, Bill Neely who is the chief global correspondent and Keir Simmons who is the senior international correspondent for Today. To be honest Richard and Bill’s titles seem like they overlap, the only thing is that Richards on air more often and travels to more dangerous places.

The new titles at the BBC are because of the job evaluation done a couple of years ago. People are just starting to use them a bit more.

They correlate to pay grades, so you have something like:

Presenter
Senior Presenter
Lead Presenter
Chief Presenter

A lot of reporters and correspondents have a pay grade title (similar to above) but then a different one that's used on-air.

So essentially they’re there long enough for those titles but aside from pay they have no added responsibility.
