I'll agree, Ranvir and Roger don't seem to get on all that well. But then, neither did Gordon seem to be too happy with this grinning young upstart when he first ended up with her! They seemed to get used to one another eventually...

I remember it was intially uneasy to start with, but they clicked after a while, for some reason I cannot warm to Roger, no disrespect to the man, he's experienced and knows what he's doing but he just seems wooden. Granted Gordon left some big shoes to fill when he retired and I know these things take time, but I'm not a fan of NWT at the moment, hopefully he and Ranvir may settle more once they're at MediaCity, but who knows.

Indeed, I do sence some very odd frostyness between them, even in tonights show Roger made a comment about looking forward to the NW Oxford Road Inside Out Special on BBC Two, and merely received a rather chilly front from Ranvir falsely smiling. One would expect had Gordon made a comment, it would provoke some banter/further discussion?

IIRC Dianne Oxberry was very frosty towards Ranvir when she started, and the awkwardness persisted for a WHILE. I wouldn't hold your breath on the awkwardness between Roger and Ranvir ending any time soon. I get the general impression that Ranvir is probably difficult to work with.

It is quite strange as I also get the impression that Ranvir doesn't get on with Roger. (Who says on air chemistry doesn't matter) yet Dianne seems to have hit it off with him having worked with him before.

It's also worthy to note that Gordon is getting mentioned a fair bit since he left, especially at the end of programme chit chat. This is something I'd have thought the programme would have wanted to have avoided in order for Roger and Ranvir to have settled in as a team and not have the viewers constantly reminded of the past, so to speak. There have been several mentions of 'GB' and whilst he was big shoes to fill it must be difficult for Roger to be constantly reminded of the fact whilst on air.

Not all her fault, I'd wager. Indeed, I'd say any partnership will take some considerable time.

Harking back once again to the early days with her and Gordon, when she would try to make bright, happy conversation at the end of the show, he'd sometimes do little more than glare amid a rather nasty silence, and indeed on one occasion actually cut her dead when she made some jokey comment about people enjoying November 5th, and Gordon snapped back that such things only reminded HIM of the height of the Troubles back in the 60s and 70s in Northern Ireland, which REALLY felt uncomfortable to watch.

With a few exceptions, I think any such manufactured partnership takes a lot to bed in.

That's true but when it becomes clear on screen, is there not something more fundamental?

I'm watching it now on iPlayer, and it would seem that based on what you have said about Gordon, that Ranvir is behaving the same way, "difficult" when faced with a new enthusiastic co-host. (Having probably wanted a shot at anchoring the programme solo, where Gordon seemed to be miffed at having a new co-host) I dont think Roger is wooden, i think he is struggling to try and find the level of the show.

...they may get on really well behind the scenes, and what we're seeing is staff who are on edge because as anyone who has moved house will know... it is the most stressful thing in the universe.

I watched his first few shows and he was really wooden, but tonight he seemed much more comfortable, especially at the end outside Oxford Road. He seems to get on well with Tony and Dianne. It could be, as you say, Ranvir. I've always found that she thinks she is better than she is, and she deserves more of the limelight. She's a capable journalist but a bit arrogant I find.

I'm surprised we haven't seen any more photos of the new studio apart from the old, uncomplete one we had a while back. Excited now!

Dare I start a 'what was the best era for NWT?' discussion? Laughing Personally, I think it was the 2004-2007 look. The set was much nicer than what we have now - it was more of a set than just an empty space with some screens - and Gordon on his own provided a much better programme. The titles weren't brilliant but the original London music certainly was!

I don't think anyone could argue though that the short-lived 2007 look was the best in terms of titles and graphics.

Those 2002/2004 titles seemed to last forever. That overweight woman walking through Liverpool, the gardeners, the elderly people. I think TV Ark had some funny comment about it, like they'd gone to WeightWatchers or something.

Well five years - it is a long time to see the same people walking around aimlessly. I always hated those clips used right across the region - they made the region seem so dull, slow and boring compared to London's images that depicted the place as a fast, exciting city. I think that's why I've always felt NWT's version of the 2008 titles is much better because the video clips are faster.
