[quote="jf" pid="889084"]Indeed, I did the tour in August and all we saw of news was just looking down at the newsroom from above Studio E and the Media Caf

I did a similar tour and we saw the preparation for the news at one with Sophie Raworth

At what time did the tour started to see the preparation of the One o'clock news?

STUDIO A on The Andrew Marr Show today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24322044, how comes this set looks much nicer than the NC Studio A Set.

Possibly because they used photographic plates and video from the real set, rather than virtualising it. They could do that for the news channel hour if they could get some plates of Studio C and then recreate it in the virtual domain, but that takes some time.

Possibly what made this easier is that they only had to recreate a small part of the studio B set. That saved them some time.

No, it is definitely a recreation not photographic plates based of a few points - No gaps in the LED Screen which is curved rather than made up of 5 panels. There is no grey panel at the bottom of the lightbox. The radius of the rostrum appears to be noticeably smaller than Studio B. In the long pan (05:19) there is a white light box (can be seen in the reflection in the floor) above the LED Screen rather than what is there in Studio B. Also, at the risk of sounding like Muckspreader, it would presumably be incredibly hard to get the photographic/video plates to line up with these Camera Shots given the fact that the Camera never appears to stay still.

I used to post something about the presenter abling to pick between left and right screen for talking to correspondents. I'm thinking I'm wrong now that I've seen better evidences. It does look like the right or left screen selection is determined by the position of the newsreader. This is evident from the recent changes to the opening of the 5am-8am UKT news. Pre-change period, 2 newsreaders sit together, so the main newsreader is actually sitting very near to the pillar besides her left TV panel. So, the conferencing to correspondents will always be through her left screen. Now, post-change period, where only 1 newsreader sits, she will sit more to the centre of the desk. Hence, she will use her right screen for conferencing, and during conferencing, her left screen will show the globe with waves coming out animation. For Newsday, it will be the Newsday animation on her left TV. Also, pre-change period, we don't get to see 2 TVs during conferencing. The cam is actually zooming to her nearer, and we see just she and her left TV.

Might do an update with side-by-side pic of pre and post sitting positions if I have the time. Hope my left and right screen 'obssession' doesn't bore anyone. Very Happy

As was mentioned the last time you brought this up, the director decides which screen the presenter will turn to -it isn't based on how close to the middle of the desk is, if they prefer turning one direction over another, or just a whim in where they go 'I WANT TO TURN LEFT'.

I know now it's not the newreader who thinks to turn to wherever they like, but it's more like based on the slot of the program and the sitting positioning. Yes, they they take the orders from the director, but then that also depends on the program isn't it. Like the previous one, it's always the left screen. Let's put this way, there is a certain set protocol for each program. Like okay in recent change of the 5-8am slot, there's gonna be first headlines followed by music, then more headlines, biz and etc. So this is based on a unanimous decision by the managers. So once this is in effect, every team on duty for that slot will have to follow the format right? So in the case, above, the decision is to have only 1 presenter now, so the people in charge would have decided they follow with the common bulletin trend whereby a single presenter will use the right screen. So once it's put in effect, then that's gonna be always the screen to be for that slot of programme. On the other hand, the director does not usually make impromptu decisions like, 'today, i might want newsreader to use her left screen for the second conference', unless it is something very out of ordinary that warrants a diversion from norm, like maybe technicalities. Sorry I don't quite agree still with the notion of the director deciding where, I would think it would be more towards the fixed protocol decided, and then the director on duty may be able to make diversions where necessary, but is usually following the format decided for the slot. And from my observation, the trend to decide which screen to look at is usually based on the sitting positioning. I have not yet seen other bulletins with single presenter using her left screen for conferencing in Studio C. Smile
